How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Begging Your Customers)

Why Google Reviews Matter More Than You Think

Here’s a number that should get your attention: 93% of consumers read online reviews before choosing a local business. That means nearly everyone checking out your Cape Cod business is reading what past customers have to say before they ever pick up the phone.

But reviews do more than build trust with potential customers. Google uses reviews as a major ranking factor for local search results. More reviews (and better ones) mean your business shows up higher when someone searches for what you offer. Fewer reviews? You get buried under competitors who asked.

A business with 50 genuine reviews will almost always outrank a similar business with 5 reviews, all else being equal. Reviews tell Google that real people are interacting with your business and that you are worth recommending.

When to Ask for a Review

Timing is everything. The best moment to ask for a review is right after a positive interaction, when the experience is still fresh and the customer is happiest.

For a contractor, that is the moment the homeowner is admiring the finished deck. For a restaurant, it is when the server drops the check and the table is still raving about the meal. For a dentist, it is right after a painless cleaning when the patient is relieved and grateful.

The general rule: ask within 24 hours. The longer you wait, the less likely someone is to follow through. People forget. Life gets busy. Strike while the iron is hot.

How to Actually Ask

You do not need a script. You do not need to be awkward about it. Here are three ways that work.

In person. This is the most effective method, and it is simpler than you think. After a positive interaction, just say something like: “I’m really glad you’re happy with the work. If you have a minute, a Google review would mean a lot to us. It helps other folks on the Cape find us.” That is it. No gimmicks.

Via text or SMS. Send a short follow-up text within a few hours. Something like: “Thanks for choosing us today! If you have 30 seconds, we’d love a quick Google review. Here’s the link: [your link].” Text messages have a 98% open rate. Most people will at least see it.

Via email. Include a direct link to your Google review page in a follow-up email. Keep the email short. One or two sentences of thanks, then the link. Do not bury the review request at the bottom of a long newsletter.

If you want help setting up automated review requests as part of a broader local SEO strategy, Google Business Profile optimization can make a real difference in how consistently you collect reviews.

Make It Stupid Easy

The number one reason people do not leave reviews is friction. They intend to do it, but then they have to search for your business, find the right page, and figure out where to click. By then, they have moved on.

Create a direct Google review link. Here is how: Search for your business on Google. Click “Write a review” on your Google Business Profile. Copy the URL from your browser’s address bar. That is your direct review link. When someone clicks it, they land right on the review form with no extra steps.

You can also generate a short link by going to your Google Business Profile dashboard, clicking “Ask for reviews,” and copying the link Google provides.

Once you have that link, put it everywhere:

  • On receipts and invoices
  • In your email signature
  • On thank-you cards
  • In text message follow-ups
  • On a small card you hand to customers after a job

The fewer clicks between your customer and the review form, the more reviews you will get. It really is that simple.

How to Handle Negative Reviews

They will happen. Even the best businesses on Cape Cod get a bad review now and then. What matters is how you respond.

Respond quickly. Within 24 to 48 hours. A fast response shows you care and that you are paying attention.

Stay professional. Thank the reviewer for their feedback. Acknowledge their experience, even if you disagree with their version of events. Something like: “We’re sorry to hear about your experience. We take this seriously and would like to make it right.”

Take it offline. Offer to continue the conversation by phone or email. Say: “Please reach out to us at [phone/email] so we can address this directly.” This shows other readers that you handle problems, and it keeps a back-and-forth argument off your public profile.

Never argue. It does not matter if the review is unfair. Arguing in public makes you look worse, not the reviewer. Future customers are watching how you handle criticism. A calm, professional response can actually win you more business than a five-star review.

What NOT to Do

Google has clear rules about reviews, and breaking them can get your reviews removed or your profile penalized.

Do not offer incentives. No discounts, no freebies, no “leave a review and get 10% off.” This violates Google’s Terms of Service. If Google catches it, they can remove all your reviews.

Do not buy fake reviews. This should go without saying, but businesses still do it. Google’s algorithms are getting better at detecting fake reviews, and the penalties are severe. You could lose your entire Google Business Profile.

Do not review-gate. Review-gating means only asking happy customers to leave public reviews while funneling unhappy customers to a private feedback form. Google explicitly prohibits this practice. Ask everyone the same way, and let the chips fall where they may. If you are doing good work, the positive reviews will far outweigh the negative ones.
